Codex 2: 5 Projects : Monday Project (1)
Wherein, I draw 1,974 circles in the course of a day and erase and paint over them by the evening.
My simple doodles at long last leave the 2-D world of my notebooks and head into the space around me. Beginning with the number equal to the year in which I was born. After this day, the project will finally move into the non-gallery environment on going, documented and continuing from 1,975 on up.
Codex 2: 5 Projects further examines an exploded sketchbook. In Codex, I took 5 walls in a gallery and assigned to them timed drawings. One hour was the shortest; eight hours was the longest. The name came from Beuys from DaVinci — a connection drawn by a similar desire to encode in a sketchbook theoretical investigations as well as simply aesthetic concerns. From the cosmos to the human body, DaVinci was curious about more than just art as was Beuys.I'm not cocky enough to think that I'm on par with either of these greats. So my apologies to both men for ripping them off. I'm curious about the idea of the sketchbook though. And the ways in which these past examples were presented. DaVinci's was discovered tucked away in some old Italian library in the 1960s. Beuys made his in response and sold it in multiples. Both were hand made; however, DaVinci's was intended to be a completely private affair, while Beuys toyed with notions of mass production and private vs. public. Beuys drawings, doodles and notes are almost completely unintelligable to anyone but him. Yet, they were sold to a public. (Although, hardly the masses. Each one was sold at prices in the thousands.)
Sketchbooks have increasingly become public endeavors — presented as part of portfolios, shown in galleries and in retrospectives in museums. As artists have explored exposing processes, perhaps the notion of mystery and privacy in technique in practice are being lost to an audience that now wants to know how.
The sketchbook as a performance then is the complete loss of private practice. It's also transforms the two-dimensions into four. The extra two dimensions that the audience asks to see when it asks, "How?"
But how does a performance sketchbook look like? How does a performance artist sketch? Where do I experiment and launch larger investigations?
Thank god books weren't part of some cool-kids clique when I was in school. Harry Potter's a fraud.
Ideas are flying at me — evidence that I've hit on something that I actually am interested in — but it's going to be hard to corral them. I need an idea wrangler. That's what the bLog is for.
There are five days in the senior show. Each day is a study for or a part of some larger exploration that I'm working toward/on — performance project/sketches. This fits nicely into the classical idea of a codex, an individual book for notes which is part of a series. My first codex series was a rip off of Joseph Bueys who was ripping them off from DaVinci. Each day I need to flesh out what I'm sketching about and how that fits into larger projects. Each day needs it's own artist statement.
Where then is that last post leading to?
How can I connect my past to this moment — a Senior Show — how can beginnings and endings be represented together? And what to do with the things that have already been set into motion?
Briefly, the sound recitals are staying. I'm probably going to kill the Monday performance and the Wednesday evening recital has been moved to Saturday, in part, to accomodate louder music.
The bookwork with Amber and our store — Acmetc., a play on our initials — will be the opening.
The Center Gallery Space is the stage for five different projects/performance explorations tied to my first performance-based project, Codex: (5) Days, (5) Walls. In that piece, I turned a gallery into a daily sketch book. I created different timed drawings on five walls in a gallery in San Francisco. My current piece will be Codex 2: (5) Days, (5) Projects. I'm interested in exploring the connections in my work and the connection to the beginning (1974) and the ending (for now). On Wednesday of that week, Andrew and I are finally going to connect the postcard project in the Dells to the Bay Area.

I have always made the opposite decision to the one that I really want to make. In fact, I can be fairly certain that if I want to know what decision I shouldn't make, I should look at which decision I want to make. It's ridiculous, but I find that I ask myself regularly: "Which is the decision that I really want?" Versus which I want right now. I have to go down the road that is initially more interesting to discover that the other pathway is both more provocative and a better fit. Perhaps this is a necessary part of my process. But it's a bitch, I can tell you, and I'd rather not deal with the expense and the drama everytime.
Right now. I'm going through the transition between one pathway and the right one.
At the beginning of the fall, I started school completely blank from summer. My work in Chicago was a disappointment. I was feeling completely disconnected from myself and my work. I couldn't connect with what I had done or been doing. So I laid out a series of proposals, none of which had a connection to my previous self. Some of those ideas are valid and will be incorporated, but a lot of those pathways are too far afield require too big of a break with myself and my work to undertake in a semester. I'm sorry but Rome (and my identity) were not built in a day.
In the last few weeks, however, I've spent some time working on my DVD reel, writing a new artist's statement, reviewing my work and seeing it all within the context of performance work pioneers. At the end of this process, I realized that I'm not done exploring the things I have been exploring, that my artist's statement is still valid. My work is not always appreciated, I don't think. In part because, I have a thing for the man-with-a-video-camera school of 1970s work, which is so maligned. I have to find my own validity in this type of work and find a place to which to up-date this aesthetic.
I read an article by Vitto Acconci recently, who is one of my favorite artists on aesthetic and conceptual levels. In it, he laid out a conceptual framework for his investigation of the viewer, the performer and the space. It was a revelation to see the philosophical framework of a his minimalist aesthetic. I am radically against too much self analysis of one's own work. I think the interpretation needs to come from the viewer. I do believe that one's work needs to operate within a framework. Acconci's framework was divorced of content analysis beyond the structure of viewing. I don't need to figure out what my work is about — which I'm reluctant to do — just how it functions.
